Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (2016=100) – January, 2023
The Labour Bureau, an attached office of the M/o Labour & Employment, has been compiling Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers every month on the basis of retail prices collected from 317 markets spread over 88 industrially important centres in the country. The index is compiled for 88 centres and All-India and is released on the last working day of succeeding month. The index for the month of January, 2023 is being released in this press release.
The All-India CPI-IW for January, 2023 increased by 0.5 points and stood at 132.8 (one hundred thirty two point eight). On 1-month percentage change, it increased by 0.38 per cent with respect to previous month compared to decrease of 0.24 per cent recorded between corresponding months a year ago.
The maximum upward pressure in current index came from Housing group contributing 0.40 percentage points to the total change. At item level, House rent, Wheat, Wheat Atta, Cow Milk, Apple, Banana, Orange, Brinjal, Lady Finger, Kundru, Cumin Seed / Jira, Egg Hen, Cooked Meal, Pan Finished, Zarda, Medicine Allopathic, Toilet Soap, etc. are responsible for the rise in index. However, this increase was largely checked by Potato, Cabbage, Carrot, Cauliflower, Peas, Onion, Capsicum, French Beans, Green Coriander Leaves, Radish, Tomato, Soyabean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Poultry Chicken, etc. putting downward pressure on the index.
At centre level, Coimbatore recorded a maximum increase of 3 points. Among others, 3 centres recorded increase between 2 to 2.1 points, 14 centres between 1 to 1.9 points and 39 centres between 0.1 to 0.9 points. On the contrary, Labac- Silchar recorded a maximum decrease of 1.5 points. Among others, 4 centers recorded decrease between 1 to 1.3 points and 27 centres between 0.1 to 0.9 points. Rest of five centers index remained stationary.
Year-on-year inflation for the month stood at 6.16 per cent compared to 5.50 per cent for the previous month and 5.84 per cent during the corresponding month a year before. Similarly, Food inflation stood at 5.69 per cent against 4.10 per cent of the previous month and 6.22 per cent during the corresponding month a year ago.

The Labour Bureau, an attached office of the M/o Labour & Employment, has been compiling Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers every month on the basis of retail prices collected from 317 markets spread over 88 industrially important centres in the country. The index is compiled for 88 centres and All-India and is released on the last working day of succeeding month. The index for the month of February, 2023 is being released in this press release.
The All-India CPI-IW for February, 2023 decreased by 0.1 point and stood at 132.7 (one thirty two point seven) points. On 1-month percentage change, it decreased by 0.08 per cent with respect to previous month. A decrease of 0.08 per cent was recorded between corresponding months a year ago too.
The maximum downward pressure in current index came from Food & Beverages group contributing 0.1 percentage point to the total change. At item level, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brinjal, Carrot, Onion, Potato, Peas, French-bean, Drum Stick, Kundru, Grapes, Sunflower Oil, Soyabean Oil, Mustard Oil, Poultry/Chicken, Eggs-hen and Fish Fresh etc. are responsible for the fall in index. However, this decrease was checked by Rice, Wheat, Wheat Atta, Buffalo Milk, Cow Milk, Pure Ghee, Garlic, Gourd, Lady’s finger, Parwal, Cumin Seed/Jira, Apple, Banana, Mango, Country liquor, F oreign liquor and Medicine Allopathic, etc. putting upward pressure on the index.
At centre level, Raniganj, Jalpaiguri and Puduchery recorded a maximum decrease of 1.8 points each. Among others, 5 centres recorded decrease between 1 to 1.4 points and 32 centres between 0.1 to 0.9 points. On the contrary, Amritsar recorded a maximum increase of 3.1 points. Among others, 7 centres recorded increase between 1 to 1.9 points and 37 centres between 0.1 to 0.9 points. Rest of 3 centres’ indices remained stationary.
Year-on-year inflation for the month stood at 6.16 per cent compared to 6.16 per cent for the previous month also and 5.04 per cent during the corresponding month a year before. Similarly, Food inflation stood at 6.13 per cent against 5.69 per cent of the previous month and 5.09 per cent during the corresponding month a year ago.

The All-India CPI-IW for March, 2023 increased by 0.6 points and stood at 133.3 (one hundred thirty three point three). On 1-month percentage change, it increased by 0.45 per cent with respect to previous month compared to increase of 0.80 per cent recorded between corresponding months a year ago.
The maximum upward pressure in current index came from Fuel & Light group contributing 0.25 percentage points to the total change. At item level, Cooking Gas / LPG, Fire wood and Chips, Hospital / Nursing Home Charges, Medicine Allopathic, Motor Cycle / Scooter Mopad, Toilet Soap, Tooth Paste, Arhar Dal, Cow Milk, Dairy Milk, Fish Fresh, Pure Ghee, Apple, Banana, Cauliflower, Brinjal, Cabbage, Bitter Guard, French bean, Lemon, Peas, Cumin Seed / Jira, Cooked Meal are responsible for the rise in index. However, this increase was largely checked by Wheat Atta, Rice, Potato, Onion, Drum Stick, Lady Finger, Tomato, Grapes, Soyabean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Mustard Oil, Cotton Seed Oil, Poultry Chicken, Egg-Hen etc. putting downward pressure on the index.
At centre level, Ahmedabad recorded a maximum increase of 3.3 points followed by Jamshedpur and Gurugram with 3.2 and 3.1 points respectively. Among others, 3 centres recorded increase between 2 to 2.9 points, 23 centres between 1 to 1.9 points and 43 centres between 0.1 to 0.9 points. On the contrary, Salem recorded a maximum decrease of 1.4 points followed by Tirunelveli and Tripura with 1.1 and 1 point respectively. Among others, 9 centers recorded decrease between 0.1 to 0.9 points. Rest of four centers index remained stationary.
Year-on-year inflation for the month stood at 5.79 per cent compared to 6.16 per cent for the previous month and 5.35 per cent during the corresponding month a year before. Similarly, Food inflation stood at 5.02 per cent against 6.13 per cent of the previous month and 6.27 per cent during the corresponding month a year ago.

The index is compiled for 88 centres and All-India and is released on the last working day of succeeding month. The index for the month of April, 2023 is being released in this press release.
The All-India CPI-IW for April, 2023 increased by 0.9 points and stood at 134.2 (one hundred thirty four point two). On 1-month percentage change, it increased by 0.68 per cent with respect to previous month compared to increase of 1.35 per cent recorded between corresponding months a year ago.
The maximum upward pressure in current index came from Food & Beverages group contributing 0.39 percentage points to the total change. At item level, Rice, Arhar Dal, Apple, Banana, orange, cauliflower, Brinjal, cabbage, Ginger, peas, Dairy Milk, French bean, Lemon, Cumin seed/Jira, Chillies dry, Cooked Meal, Poultry Chicken, Ladies Suiting, etc. are responsible for the rise in index. However, this increase was largely checked by Wheat Atta, Tomato, onion, Drum Stick, Lady’s Finger, Mango, Soyabean oil, sunflower Oil, Mustard Oil, Egg-Hen, Electricity Domestic, Firewood and Chips, etc. putting downward pressure on the index.
At centre level, Howrah recorded a maximum increase of 4.1 points. Among others, 4 centres recorded increase between 2 to2.9 points,30 centres between 1 to 1.9 points and 37 centres between 0.1 to 0.9 points. On the contrary, Salem recorded a maximum decrease of 1.9 points. Among others, 11 centers recorded decrease between 0.1 to 0.9 points. Rest of four centers index remained stationary.
Year-on-year inflation for the month stood at 5.09 per cent compared to 5.79 per cent for the previous month and 6.33 per cent during the corresponding month a year before. Similarly, Food inflation stood at 4.16 per cent against 5.02 per cent of the previous month and 7.05 per cent during the corresponding month a year ago.

The All-India CPI-IW for May, 2023 increased by 0.5 points and stood at 134.7 (one hundred thirty four point seven). On 1-month percentage change, it increased by 0.37 per cent with respect to previous month compared to increase of 1.02 per cent recorded between corresponding months a year ago.
The maximum upward pressure in current index came from Food & Beverages group contributing 0.37 percentage points to the total change. At item level, Rice, Arhar Dal, Buffalo milk, Dairy Milk, Poultry Chicken, Egg-Hen, Apple, Grapes, Brinjal, Garlic, Ginger, Potato, Onion, Tomato, Sugar white, Cumin seed/Jira, Supari, Saree Cotton, Shirt Cloth Cotton, Medicine Allopathic, Private tuition/Coaching Center Fees, etc. are responsible for the rise in index. However, this increase was largely checked by Wheat Atta, Lady’s Finger, Lemon, Mango, Soyabean Oil, Sunflower Oil, Mustard Oil, Electricity Domestic, Kerosene Oil, etc. putting downward pressure on the index.
At centre level, Jabalpur recorded a maximum increase of 5.2 points followed by Salem with 3.8 points. Among others, 2 centres recorded increase between 2 to 2.6 points, 14 centres between 1 to 1.9 points and 34 centres between 0.1 to 0.9 points. On the contrary, Ludhiana recorded a maximum decrease of 1 point. Among others, 26 centers recorded decrease between 0.1 to 0.9 points. Rest of nine centers index remained stationary.
Year-on-year inflation for the month stood at 4.42 per cent compared to 5.09 per cent for the previous month and 6.97 per cent during the corresponding month a year before. Similarly, Food inflation stood at 3.24 per cent against 4.16 per cent of the previous month and 7.92 per cent during the corresponding month a year ago.
